Does Hypochlorous Acid Dry Out Your Skin?

Here’s What You Can Do About It

Some people experience mild dryness when using hypochlorous acid spray daily. Learn why it happens and how to protect your skin with a gentle moisturizer like hyaluronic acid or SkinIntegra.

Hypochlorous acid spray is one of the most versatile products you can keep on hand for healthy skin. It’s antimicrobial, non-toxic, and incredibly effective for everything from foot hygiene to post-workout refreshers. Many of our customers use it daily as part of their routine.

But occasionally, someone asks: “Can hypochlorous acid cause dry skin?”

The short answer is—it’s rare, but yes, some individuals do experience mild dryness when using hypochlorous acid frequently. The good news? It’s easy to manage without having to stop using this powerful, skin-safe cleanser.

Why Would Hypochlorous Acid Cause Dryness?

Hypochlorous acid is naturally produced by your white blood cells to fight bacteria, viruses, and other harmful invaders. When applied topically, it helps disinfect the skin without the sting, smell, or irritation of alcohol or bleach.

That said, because hypochlorous acid is a cleanser, it can mildly disrupt the skin barrier—especially if you're using it multiple times per day on delicate or already-dry skin. You may notice:

  • Tightness or dryness

  • Mild flaking

  • A sensation of skin being stripped or too “clean”

This doesn’t mean hypochlorous acid is harming your skin. It just means your skin may need a little help restoring its moisture barrier.

What You Can Do to Prevent or Treat Dryness

Here’s how to continue enjoying the antimicrobial benefits of hypochlorous acid spray while keeping your skin soft, hydrated, and healthy:

1. Let the Spray Air Dry

After applying the spray, always allow it to air dry naturally for at least 60 seconds. This ensures full antimicrobial effectiveness and reduces the risk of skin disruption from wiping or layering too quickly.

2. Follow With a Moisturizer

Once the spray is fully dry, apply a lightweight, skin-supportive moisturizer to lock in hydration. Great options include:

  • Hyaluronic acid serum – Helps retain moisture and plumps the skin naturally.

  • SkinIntegra Rapid Crack Repair Cream – Especially useful for feet or hands that are dry, cracked, or callused.

  • Fragrance-free ceramide moisturizers – These help restore the skin barrier, particularly in cooler or drier climates.

This step makes a big difference for anyone experiencing flakiness, tightness, or sensitivity after using hypochlorous acid.

3. Adjust Frequency if Needed

If your skin is feeling dry, you might reduce usage to once daily or switch to targeted application (for example, just spraying feet or high-friction areas). You can always increase frequency again once your skin has adjusted.
